Ocean and Environmental Awareness- Safety With Wildlife
We do take a significant amount of time in our water related programs to share our knowledge of the ocean. We teach about how to safely swim in open ocean, how to avoid and escape rip currents, how to respect other water users, and awareness of marine life. Campers will learn so much about the ocean that it will increase their comfortability and maximize their amazement and experience in the ocean.
Safety is our first priority as proven by our six years of camp operations and safety record. We follow guidelines and training from both American Red Cross and United States Lifeguarding Association to ensure the safest and most rewarding experiences. We always keep a student to instructor ratio of 4:1 and all of our instructors have certifications in First Aid, CPR, and are open ocean trained. We also carry a comprehensive insurance package, including general liability.
Ocean Safety Education consists of:
- Wave prediction and judgement
- Longshore current identification
- Conservation of the Coast awareness
- Sun exposure and UV awareness
- Beach Ecology and marine science education
- Venomous Marine Life awareness and first aid
- Popular marine life education
- Rip current identification, awareness, and existing procedure

Beach Sports Camps are open to all ages and abilities- so no excuses! We are trained professionals that are happy to accommodate any special needs. Please make us aware of any special needs that you or child may have including any physical ailments, challenges or allergies.
All of our beach life instructors are American Red Cross Certified in CPR and first aid, and open water safety. We also take extra precaution and recruit medical interns to help us keep a watchful eye on the water. We have an impeccable safety record and we are very proud of it!
SPI Sessions has a unique approach to our staff. We call ourselves ‘Beach Life Instructors’ because we believe we share more with the student than just a surfing lesson. We are well-rounded individuals with love for all things friendly to our beach and lifestyle. We maintain a rotating staff of 4-5 Beach life Instructors and 3-5 Science Specific Trainers. In a lesson setting we maintain a 4:1 ratio of surfer to instructor staff to maintain the attention necessary for adequate surf technique and stoke. We are very proud to have a strong staff of vetted individuals eager to share the stoke of surfing and eco-awareness.
Safety is a priority with us at SPI Sessions.
-Our instructors follow a designated operational plan for safety during lessons and are trained and certified in First Aid/CPR and open water safety.
- We also have a safety script that each session reviews.
- … and just in case of an emergency, we are prepared with an Emergency Plan (Click here to read).
We do so much in our Beach Sports camp and try to cater to the weather conditions, age groups of children and what it is that they WANT to do. We have so many things ready to go and each day is a new adventure, sport, activity and learning experience.
Our camp and lessons location is straight out from city beach access 4. It is also called "beach circle". The public parking lot has limited free parking, however, there is also parking on the street side, and in front of both the Aquarius Condominiums and the Padre Grand. Lock up and Meet us on the beach!
Surfing is a variable sport, but there are so many skills and fun ways to experience surfing out of the water. We take pride in making sure that our camps are full of fun things-to-do. We have balance boards, lily pad mats (to roll out and play on in the water), snorkels and SUPS to take out on flat ocean water days). We make sure the kids leave camp with a brain full of surfing knowledge
If you need to cancel your reservation we ask that you will do so 7-days prior to your booked camp. Camps cancelled 7-days in advance will receive a full refund. Please keep in mind, we have to turn people away every year and we do count on the full camps to keep up with our camp costs of business.
