Mick Fanning Soft Boards: Best Choice for Beginners and Experienced Surfers

"Why Soft Surfboards are the Best Choice for Beginners and Experienced Surfers Alike: The Benefits of Mick Fanning's Soft Boards"

Perhaps you've noticed that we've transitioned our entire camp and lessons surf board quiver to MF Soft Boards? We thought we'd let you in on all the information we used to make this choice and why we've also invested into a range of his soft board and performance board collection to make available for you in our shop!

Mick Fanning is a professional surfer from Australia who has won three world titles and numerous other competitions. In recent years, he has also become known for his line of soft surfboards, which are designed to be more user-friendly and safer than traditional hard boards.

One of the main benefits of soft boards is that they are much softer and more flexible than hard boards, which means that they are less likely to cause injury if you fall on them or collide with them. This makes them particularly well-suited for beginners, or for people who are learning to surf in crowded or crowded conditions.

In addition to being safer, soft boards are also easier to ride than hard boards. They are more forgiving, which means that you can make mistakes and still stay on the board. This makes them a great option for people who are just starting out, or who are still learning the ropes.

MF Built for Fun

But MF boards didn't stop there. They created a new line of soft top boards that includes an actual high performance glassed board inside. This is what they call their Epoxy Lam board: an EPS foam core, a hybrid carbon spine, E-cloth and epoxy internal shell and a soft exterior shell.

"Elite surfers traditionally steer clear of riding soft surfboards due to a lack of performance. Traditionally soft boards are produced utilizing rudimentary materials and construction techniques. Performance issues were successfully resolved by utilizing construction techniques and materials that are typically reserved for cutting-edge high performance surfboards and blending these materials and techniques with traditional soft surfboard construction." (MF Boards).

If you're interested in trying out a MF soft board, talk to your SPI SESSIONS instructor or visit our Shop at 5717 Padre Blvd. Whether you're a seasoned pro or a complete beginner, a soft board can be a great addition to your quiver and is well worth considering.

Texas Long boarding Contest takes Center Stage

Happy Cinco De Mayo weekend!

For many South Texans, the holiday might be celebrated remembering the Battle at Pueblo, a famous Tejano leader, or a great margarita special at a local dive, but for local Texan long boarders, the weekend is usually marked by a special event called the Cinco De Mayo Pro/AM.

In 2015, a man named Kevin Greer aspired to produce a Pro/AM Event in Texas for the surfing community and beyond. With Kevin's ambition and mad production skills, Kevin produced the event that included: Long boarding Contest, Pro Nose riding Contest, Volleyball Tourney, Paddle boarding Long Distance Race, Paddle boarding Night Time Sprint Races, and Horse Shoe Battle. Sadly, we lost Kevin in 2020 to Lung Cancer.

Fortunately, Kevins peers and committed team members knew it would be necessary to carry on Kevin's vision. The Texas Longboard Surf Club, led by one of Kevin's former and faithful surf team members, Zach May, was formed with inspiration to keep the contest alive. Last year, the Cinco Pro/AM was well received and supported. South Padre Island was represented by SPI SESSIONS Surf Team members, Chris Green, Soren Kayser, Tristan Green, Gavin Del Rio, and head honcho, Ms.Aarin who dominated the contest long boarding line-up with numerous 1st place trophies and wins!

2021 Results:

Chris Green : 2nd Place Mens Longboarding
Tristan Green: 1st Place Boys Longboarding
Soren Kayser: 3rd Place Menehue Longboarding
Gavin Del Rio: 1st Place Jr. Longboarding AM
Aarin Hartwell: 1st Place Womens Longboarding Pro

We want to wish the best of luck to our team that will once again representing SPI SESSIONS and South Padre Island this weekend in Corpus Christi, Texas! Ms.Aarin is cheering you on from her nursery! Click here to follow the Texas Long boarding Surf Club or the Cinco De May Pro/AM on Facebook.  Exceptional Aloha to our friends that have put some much effort in producing the event year-again in honor of Kevin Greer.

Turtle Season 2020

Turtle Season and Summer Camp 2020

Ocean Science has a lot to do with protecting the creatures of the sea! Here's a little about Sea Turtles on SPI!

It’s springtime on South Padre Island and the nesting turtles are making their way onshore to lay their eggs. Each year, female turtles return to the very same beach where they hatched to lay eggs. On SPI, most of the nesting turtles are Kemp’s Ridley.

The Kemp's Ridley are not only local, but they are also in need of serious help. The Kemp's Ridley is a critically endangered species and we believe that by educating future generations about these legendary locals, they have a better shot at sticking around.

In 2016, (SPI Sessions' first year of Kid Summer Camp) we included a field trip to Sea Turtle Inc., a local turtle and research facility, to our Saturday Science Camp and we had a blast checking out the turtles. After our short field trip, we crafted our own turtles from recycled egg cartons.

Turtles are important for the health of our oceans worldwide, but they are faced with many dangers from the very day they are born. To help teach these hazards and the incredible lifecycle of the turtle, we like to play a game during Surf Camp called "Turtle Hurdles".

This game, provided by Aquatic WILD Curriculum,  allows students to role play as turtles, or the limiting factors affecting turtles, through a highly active life cycle journey. It's fun, interactive, and the kids really get it!

We also learn about what Sea turtles eat and why plastic pollution is a big deal for them. We all remember the infamous video of the turtle with a straw up it's nose. This video sparked a global movement to help raise awareness of plastics and their effects on ocean wildlife.  Check out what SPI Sessions has done to help promote change locally: "SPI For A Strawless Ocean."

Teaching about turtles and the reasons they might be endangered, sparks great environmental education conversations. That's why we use a STEAM approach to our teaching pedagogy. Combining experiential learning with design thinking, engineering and even art, we promote solution based opportunities for the children to grow with.

We found this turtle at a local beach cleanup. He wasn't doing to well, do we gave a call to our local experts. If you see a turtle onshore, please contact Sea Turtle Inc. at 957-761-4511 so the nest can be found and protected.

Re-scheduled Int. Surf Day is Tomorrow

International Surfing Day- South Padre

Tomorrow We Celebrate

Tomorrow couldn’t come soon enough! After a week of wicked weather and high seas we are looking forward to great conditions for tomorrow’s much anticipated event.  Saturday, July 23rd, will resume the celebration of our favorite holiday “International Surfing Day,” which was postponed last Saturday. Hundreds of children will be eager to take their turn at free surfing lessons.

SPI Sessions will also be present to assist with surfing lessons, celebrate Surfrider’s accomplishments and supporting the “SPI for a Strawless Ocean” campaign. In an effort to encourage “refuse, reuse, reduce, recycle” as a lifestyle change, SPI Sessions’ Beach Life Instructors will be passing around a “Statement of Support” for individuals to sign. Feel free to ask questions and talk to knowledgeable campaign officials!

Don’t forget that International Surfing Day is a pre-registered event, but it shouldn’t stop you from coming out and seeing all the stoke that is alive on our sand bar! SPI Sessions also has several events coming up, so stay tuned and check out one of our awesome surf camps!

SPI SESSIONS for a Strawless Ocean

We can't take it any longer... the straws are driving us crazy. There's only so much art we can make until it just sucks- and art doesn't suck, so why should we? Read more on why SPI Sessions is taking a stand, along with thousands of other businesses and organizations, to stop sucking.
